MEXICAN CORN

for those of you who grew up in LA like me, this will be a taste of home.

2 fire roasted corn covered with cotija cheese and chili powder. Squeeze a little lime and get ready to consume the best afternoon snack.

So if you are shopping in SOHO, and you get the hunger pains. Stop by Nolita and grab some corn on a stick and silence the stomach growls. After which point you can resume life and get your shop on.

Cute little place.
Their Cuban sandwich is really a sloppy banh mi in disguise.
While not bad, it's neither here nor there.

Luckily the bf and I had dinner here at a time when we didn't have to wait too long. The place is pretty small and as soon as we arrived it was a bit packed. There was a 5-10 minute wait. Not too bad at all but our tiny table was all the way in the back--scrunched up next to other diners. Not much for elbow room but we were just hoping the notoriety of the food would outshine the confined space we were dealt with.

I wasn't sure what to get. I asked the waitress for any recommendations. She was very nice and suggested the pollo mirador, which was her personal favorite. Sauteed chicken breasts with creamy garlic sauce and white rice and spicy spinach...not bad. Not bad at all. The chicken was very juicy and tender and if you drizzle some lime over the meat...oh my...simply perfect.

The bf got the steak enchiladas with spicy red ranchero sauce and a side of rice and beans. It was pretty delicious. Well cooked. Great flavor combination. The steak wasn't too dry or chewy at all.

One of their popular items is the grilled corn. Corn with butter, spices and cheese? You can never go wrong with that. The perfect appetizer. A little messy but very satisfying.

The food is great but expect limited space. VERY limited space. Ladies, don't even think about bringing your large tote bags here. It'll just be a hassle.

Love the grilled corn!!  I can eat 3 of these, if not more.

Sorry, did not care the Cuban sandwich, it was just okay.

Awesome food. Definately get the grilled corn and the sloppy jose which is their version of a sloppy joe with bbq pork on a toasted pannini type bread.

I have been hearing ravs about this place since i first moved to New York 8 months ago. It definitely lived up to its reputation. Food review:

Corn: great, but, la esquina's is superior
Sopresitas appetizer: absolutely amazing. Reminds me of el savadors pupusas
Cuban sandwich: overrated, i dont understand the hype
Sweet plantains: delicioso, but i dont think i have ever had bad sweet plaintains
dessert: some sort of unmemorable flan dish. Meh.
Bartender: cute. Makes a great hot toddy.

We needed to fix our lunch craving after a very long night out and a late morning of shopping in SoHo. So, we went back to the old tried and true. Seriously, why do we need to go anywhere else? This place is consistent, a staple, and hands down has the best corn on the cob on the planet. The corn is grilled, but not dry and the sauce with the cheese and then a bit of lime is pure perfection. I'm still thinking about it! In addition, to the corn on the cob I had the Cuban pulled pork sandwich. It was flavorful and comes with a side of fries. It satisfied my craving and hunger to the fullest. My friends had the chilaquiles and it was good too. I recommend it. This place is small and always busy. So, expect a short wait, but trust me it's worth it. Oh, and don't forget to pack some dental floss. You'll need it.

GRILLED CORN! GET IT!

The restaurant is kinda small so don't go in big groups. Went on a Sat morning around 10AM and it was PACKED. You probably wanna try going either early when they open at 9AM or off peak hours/days. We got breakfast with the grilled corn. Good size portions for the price. Their cafe con leche is pretty good, and it's a good size. If you ever been to Spain, cafe con leche is usually served in a small coffee cup and here at Cafe Habana it's double the size.

If you just want their corn, they have a to-go store front right next to the cafe. Mmm...corn...

Ok so I can add some nonhipster insight to this joint. A lot of what people like about it is that it feels very "new york", sort of trendy/cramped, waitress's with weird hairdo's/stupid outfits (attempting to look like a poster girl for urban outfitters that whole shtick)..so you walk in and its like oh here we go with this nonsense.

So let me discuss whats important here, the food. Honestly. It's fine. The corn is pretty good, the fish taco's are ok, the Cuban sandwich is probably the best thing on the menu, the side of rice/beans flavorless. I've spent a fair amount of time in Miami and honestly, this place wouldnt make the cut there. But alas its NYC....don't get me wrong, the food is fine. Just with the high reviews on yelp I was expecting a little more?
